Summer Tax Bills
Change
The
State made a change in the property tax collection process in 2005, which impacted your
future tax bills. The change
in the state law (Public Acts 356 & 357 of 2004) required all county
allocated operating millage to be shifted from the winter tax bill to the
summer tax bill over a 3-year period.
One-third of this millage was moved to the July 2005 property
tax bill, another third in July 2006, and in July 2007, and each year
thereafter, all of the Countys allocated mills are levied and
collected in the summer.
Because
of this change in the state law, you noticed an increase in the
amount of millage paid on your July property tax bill, with a
corresponding decrease on the December tax bill.
For purposes of illustration, your July 2005 County operating millage
amount was approximately one-third of the amount itemized on your
December 2004 tax bill as
Newaygo
County
. In 2006 it was two-thirds, and in 2007 all of the County
allocated mills were on the July bill. Other taxes normally collected by the County in December such as the
millage for Commission on Aging, Road Patrol, and Veterans Affairs were not
affected by this change in the law.
Summer
tax bills are sent out on July 1 each year, and the bill must be paid to
your local Treasurer by September 14 to avoid being charged additional
interest each month. If you have questions, please call us at the
