Sheriff's Office

Community Policing

Deputy Justin Visser currently runs the Newaygo County Sheriff's Community Policing office. During the school year he visits school districts throughout the county to discuss safety and other issues.  He spends time interacting with the children during lunch, recess or as needed on a one to one basis. Deputy Visser speaks to the students about strangers, police work, decision making and treating others with respect and kindness.

He attends many events at which we fingerprint children. He also attends job fairs at schools and lectures at some high schools on the police profession.

The Newaygo County Sheriff's Community Policing Officer  currently has seven active neighborhood watch communities throughout Newaygo County. The neighborhood watch program brings neighbors together for the benefit of the area in which they live. Members become more aware of their surroundings and the people that should or should not be in their neighborhood. All members of the neighborhood watch receive visits to their township meetings  by the community policing officer and/or the township officer - to keep them up to date on crime trends, safety tips, and events going on in their area.

The community policing officer is also active in the local TRIAD - an organization that is made up of Sheriff's, Chiefs of Police and retired persons - for the purpose of implementing effective crime prevention and education programs for senior citizens. We speak to many senior citizen groups on safety issues, fraud and telemarketing fraud.
