Sheriff's Office

Marine Division

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division consists of two boats, and four part-time summer employees.  The Marine Division operates on a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and funding from the County.  The Marine Division is responsible for over 230 natural lakes and two waterways made by the backwaters of hardy and Croton Dams.

The Marine Division focuses efforts on education in an attempt to gain voluntary compliance with marine laws and safety regulations; however enforcement continues to be a component of marine safety.

Safety Tips:

  1. Have proper safety equipment for your watercraft

  2. Operate your watercraft in a safe manner

  3. In case of an emergency, CALL 911

The Michigan handbook of boating laws and responsibilities can be found at www.boat-ed.com or are available at the Sheriff’s office and County Campgrounds.

Lt. Chad Palmiter oversees the Marine Division, and is available at chadp@co.newaygo.mi.us or 231-689-7303 for questions or comments regarding the Marine Division.
