Sheriff's Office

Community Policing

Deputy Phil Green currently runs the Community Policing Program within the Sheriff’s Office, along with K-9 Turbo.  Deputy Green and Turbo visit schools throughout the year and give K-9 presentations; conduct school searches, and gives lectures on the Law Enforcement Profession.

Deputy Green attends drivers training courses to promote the STOPPED Program offered by the Michigan Sheriff’s Association.  STOPPED is a parental notification system that was developed by MSA to reduce the number of young drivers who are injured or killed in motor vehicle crashes each year.  Parents can register their vehicles on-line, and if for any reason the vehicle is stopped by a Sheriff’s Deputy while a person under the age of 21 is driving, the Deputy will complete a notification card and a letter will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle with time of stop, driver name, reason for stop, and whether any citations were issued.

The Sheriff’s Office Community Policing Officer currently has four active Neighborhood Watch Communities within Newaygo County.  The Neighborhood Watch Program brings neighbors together for the benefit of the area which you live.

Benefits of Neighborhood Watch:

  1. Deter criminal activity.

  2. Creates a greater sense of security and reduces fear of crime.

  3. Builds bonds with neighbors; people look out for one another.

  4. Reduces the risk of becoming a crime victim; it reduces the physical, financial and psychological cost of crime.

  5. Instructs residence on how to observe and report suspicious activity in your community.

  6. Creates relationships within the community and the Sheriff’s Office.

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office will assist you in organizing a Neighborhood Watch program in your area, contact Deputy Green at 231-689-7303.

Deputy Green is a member of the West Michigan Crime Prevention Association of Michigan.
