Newaygo County CASA (Court Appointed

 Special Advocates) Program

By Ward Staffeld

CASA Volunteers are individuals who are appointed by a Family Court Judge to speak for the best interests of an abused and/or neglected child.  A CASA volunteer is an official part of the judicial proceedings, working alongside attorneys and social workers in an effort to offer an additional perspective on an abuse and neglect case.  Direct supervision of the CASA volunteers is provided by the CASA Volunteer Coordinator and the Court’s Deputy Director/FOC.

CASA volunteers have a broad range of duties and responsibilities.  They will meet, face to face with the assigned child at least every 30 days.  They will review appropriate records and reports and observe the child interacting with other significant family members.  Furthermore, they will meet with school officials, doctors, and others who may have additional facts regarding the case.  All of these findings will then be incorporated into a report to the Court.  They will also attend all court hearings regarding the case and help assure that the best interests of the child are being met at all times.

If you have a big heart, love children, and have time that you can offer to the Circuit Court, you may well be a perfect candidate to become a CASA volunteer.  For further information contact:
