Filing for Office - School Board

  • Local school board candidates who wish to seek office must file an Affidavit of Identity (in duplicate) and nominating petition(s) at the Newaygo County Clerk's Office no later than 4:00 p.m. on the filing deadline.

  • A $100.00 nonrefundable filing fee may be filed in lieu of petition(s).

  • Candidate withdrawal deadline elapses three (3) days following the filing deadline.

  • Signature requirements are based upon the population of the school district according to the last federal census (MCL 168.303).  School district requirements are:

 
Big Jackson

Population = 523

Minimum = 6; Maximum = 20

 
Fremont

Population = 13,035

Minimum = 40; Maximum = 100

 
Grant

Population = 8,033

Minimum = 6; Maximum = 20

 
Newaygo Population = 10,250 Minimum = 40; Maximum = 100

 
White Cloud Population = 7,924 Minimum = 6; Maximum = 20
Campaign Finance Compliance: Candidates seeking office must meet the disclosure obligations provided under Michigan's Campaign Finance Act.
As soon as a person becomes a "candidate" under the Act, he/she is required to form and register a Candidate Committee.
A candidate who seeks a school board seat MAY not be subject to the filing requirements of the Act if he/she meets the following conditions:
1)the school district in which the office is being sought  has a pupil membership count of 2,400 or less and
2)the Candidate Committee of that candidate receives or expends $1,000.00 or less in the election.
